While writing stories for years about coaches, Carroll later became one himself. He worked with AAU basketball for 25 years, leading one of his teams to a national title and five others to state championships.

He also spent many years working with the Wood County Recreation Commission and served as a committed track meet announcer and official scorekeeper across all levels of track and field competition.
