Belpre, Ohio

Pearl Hunter Swain, Jr. of Belpre, passed away surrounded by his loved ones at his residence on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

He was born in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Pearl and Irene Cusack Swain.

Pearl was a proud veteran of the United States Army, receiving the honors of Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Korean U.N. Troop, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, National Defense Medal, and Korean Service Medal. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers as an assistant lockmaster. Pearl was a people-person and enjoyed meeting people, was an avid outdoorsman, and he loved riding four-wheelers and Harley motorcycles.

His memory will be carried in the hearts of his loved ones, including his two daughters, Donna Wright (Larry) of Belleville, WV, and Doreen Reed (Tim) of St. Clairsville, OH; special granddaughter, companion, and caregiver, Angie Hanes (Brian Church); grandchildren, Dustin Wright (Jill), Andrea Emerick (Chad), Brian Burnfield (Tiffany), Tianna Baker (Walter), Tyson Swain (Jolene), and Kevin Swain (April); several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, Marcia Dupont, Donald Frye, and David Frye.

In addition to his parents, Pearl was preceded in death in 2019 by his wife of 67 years, Fanchon Marie Wigal Swain; son, David Swain; sister, Onaline Frye; and grandson, Jason Wright.

Pearl will be laid to rest 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Sunset Memory Gardens with Military Honors by West Virginia Army National Guard and American Legion Post 15.

His family would like to thank Comfort Keepers, Amedisys Hospice, and VA for the excellent care given during Pearl’s illness.
